In-country Special Humanitarian visa (subclass 201)

This visa is for you if you are living in, and subject to persecution in, your home country, and have not been able to leave that country to seek refuge elsewhere.

You might be eligible for this visa if you are:
  • are living in your home country
  • are subject to persecution in your home country
  • have not been able to leave that country to seek refuge elsewhere.

This is a permanent visa, which allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident and have access to Medicare and Centrelink services.

If a member of your immediate family was granted this visa in the past five years, they can propose you for this visa under ‘split family’ provisions.

You must:
  • be outside of Australia
  • be living in your home country
  • be subject to persecution in your home country
  • have been unable to leave your home country to seek refuge elsewhere.

You must be outside Australia when you lodge your application and when your application is granted.

Refugee visa (subclass 200)

This visa is for you if you are outside Australia, are living outside your home country and are persecuted in your home country.

To be considered for resettlement in Australia under this visa, you would usually need to be referred by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the Australian Government.

You might be eligible for this visa if you are:
  • are outside Australia
  • are living outside your home country
  • are subject to persecution in your home country

This is a permanent visa, which allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident and have access to Medicare and Centrelink services.

Woman At Risk Visa (Subclass 204)

This visa allows you to come to Australia if you are a woman outside Australia, living outside your home country, do not have the protection of a male relative and are in danger of victimisation, harassment or serious abuse because of your gender.

You might be eligible for this visa if you are:
  • are female
  • are outside Australia
  • are living outside your home country
  • do not have the protection of a male relative
  • are in danger of victimisation, harassment, or serious abuse because of your gender.

This is a permanent visa, which allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident and have access to Medicare and Centrelink services.

You must:
  • be outside of Australia
  • be living outside of your home country
  • not have the protection of a male relative
  • be in danger of victimisation, harassment, or serious abuse because you are female.

You must be outside Australia when you lodge your application and when your application is granted.

Emergency Rescue visa (subclass 203)

This visa is for you if you are subject to persecution in your home country and face an immediate threat to your life or personal security.

To be considered for resettlement in Australia under this visa, you would usually need to be referred by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the Australian Government.

You might be eligible for this visa if you:
  • are subject to persecution in your home country
  • have an urgent and compelling need to travel to Australia.

This is a permanent visa, which allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident and have access to Medicare and Centrelink services.

You must:
  • be living outside Australia
  • be persecuted in your home country
  • the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) refers you to Australia because you urgently need to be resettled.

If a member of your immediate family was granted this visa in the past five years, they can propose you under ‘split family’ provisions.

You and any eligible family members included in the application must be outside of Australia when you apply for this visa, and when the visa is granted.

Global Special Humanitarian visa (subclass 202)

This visa is for you if you are outside Australia, are living outside your home country, are subject to substantial discrimination amounting to a gross violation of your human rights in your home country, and are proposed by a person or organisation in Australia.

You might be eligible for this visa if you are:
  • are living outside your home country
  • are subject to substantial discrimination which amounts to a gross violation of your human rights in your home country
  • are proposed for this visa by a person or organisation in Australia.

This is a permanent visa, which allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident and have access to Medicare and Centrelink services.

Your Proposer:

Applications for a Global Special Humanitarian visa (subclass 202) must be supported by an eligible proposer in Australia. The proposer must be:

  • an Australian citizen
  • an Australian permanent resident
  • an organisation in Australia.

If a member of your immediate family was granted a Protection or Humanitarian visa in the past five years, they can also propose you for this visa under ‘split family’ provisions.

You and any eligible family members included in the application must be outside of Australia when you apply for this visa, and when the visa is granted.
