7. How do I qualify for the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Program?

To qualify for the General Skilled Migration Program (189, 190, 491 visas), you must:

  • Be under 45 years old
  • Have an occupation listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)
  • Meet the required points test score (minimum 65 points)
  • Have a positive skills assessment
  • Meet English language proficiency requirements
8. What is the difference between 189, 190, and 491 visas?
  • Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent Visa): A permanent visa that does not require sponsorship from a state or employer.
  • Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated Visa): A permanent visa that requires nomination from an Australian state or territory.
  • Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional Visa): A temporary visa (5 years) requiring sponsorship from a state or a relative in a designated regional area, with a pathway to permanent residency.
9. How long are each of the General Skilled Migration visas valid?
  • Subclass 189 & 190: These visas grant permanent residency from the moment they are granted.
  • Subclass 491: This is a 5-year temporary visa, and after 3 years of living and working in a regional area, holders may become eligible for permanent residency (Subclass 191).
